Chapter Ten

I went running across the street. “What is going on?” I demanded.

“Jolie, let us do our jobs, please,” Teddy said, gently moving me back.

“Why is she in cuffs?” I yelled. “What happened?”

“I asked your grandmother if the information about the recipes was true,” Meiser said.

“No, you made assumptions.” Ava had stormed out of the church and was about to pounce on Detective Meiser when Bradley grabbed her around the waist.

“Don’t you touch me!” Ava roared.

“Hey, calm down, I’m trying to keep you from getting arrested.” Bradley sucked in a breath, trying not to yell.

“So what? Even if the recipes aren’t our family’s, it doesn’t mean she killed her best friend,” I said. “You don’t live here; you don’t know any of us.”

“That’s right. I’m not biased to your cozy village antics. Now, if you will excuse me, we need to take our suspect to the station to question her.” Detective Meiser stepped behind Grandma Opal and grabbed one of her elbows, escorting her to the back of the police car.

“Grandma, I’m right behind you,” I said as I moved back into the church to retrieve my keys.

“Don’t worry about me, Jolie. This will all work itself out; I didn’t do this and the truth will come out,” she said as Meiser pushed her head down as she got into the back of the car.

“I’ve got my keys on me, Jolie, let’s go,” Ava said.

Ava and I followed close behind Meiser to the station. Ava pulled into a parking space and turned off the car, sitting still and staring dumbfounded.

I did the same. Neither of us said anything for what seemed like an eternity.

“Hey, it’s going to be okay,” Ava said encouragingly.

“Is it? What has happened to this place? Miss Siler is murdered behind our shop; not only are the secret recipes missing but now they may have never even been in my family to begin with. The whole shop is built around these recipes. And what’s happened to Betsy? I can’t believe she wouldn’t show up today. There has got to be something more going on here; I can’t help but think something has happened to her,” I said.

“I know it’s crazy right now, but we’ll figure it all out. We’ve been through everything together, and we’ll get through this too. I agree with you, though, that something bad has happened to Betsy. Also, I don’t think you should take Lydia’s word for anything; she’s been acting weirder than usual lately,” Ava said.

Ava and I jumped as Dr. Libby knocked on my window. Ava briefly started the car again so she could put the window down.

“What are you two doing here?”

“Weren’t you at Ellie’s funeral just now?” Ava leaned forward to ask.

“I wasn’t able to make it because I had a Great Dane emergency. I wanted to check with the chief to see if it’s still okay to move forward with the pet adoption next week. I was planning to head to the church after to pay my respects,” Dr.
